Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera is one of the finest cricketing venues in India. It is located on the banks of river Sabarmati and has been host to more than 35 international games of cricket. The last game played there though was in the year of 2014 as the stadium was completely brought down in 2015. It is currently undergoing renovation as a newer, bigger and better ground is being built in its place. The new ground is expected to be built with state-of-the-art facilities as well as with the capacity of more than a lakh. It is supposed to be the largest stadium in the world, surpassing the MCG.

The Sardar Patel stadium is also known as Motera, because of the area where it is located also to avoid confusion with a stadium of the same name located nearby. The ground hosted its first international game in 1983 between India and West Indies. Since then, it has been host to a lot of games that have seen the records being created and broken. One of the highlights of Sardar Patel Stadium would have to be the quarter-final of the 2011 World Cup which brought to an end the hopes of Australia to win their 4th successive trophy. Also, this ground has been a witness to two iconic moments in Indian cricket - Sunil Gavaskar getting to 10000 runs against Pakistan in 1986-87 and seven years later, Kapil Dev scalped his 432nd victim to go past Richard Hadlee.

This venue has traditionally been good for the batsmen and also helped the spinners due to the pitch being slow and conducive to turn. The new ground though is expected to be more sporting. There are also thoughts of changing the name of the stadium after the completion of the construction. Hopefully, Motera will turn out to be one of the best stadiums in not only the country but the whole world.
