Sam Fanning is a New Zealand-born Australian left-handed opening batter who has steadily risen through the Western Australia pathway on the back of prolific run-scoring and an elegant top-order game. Having moved to Australia at a young age, Fanning represented New South Wales at junior level before relocating to Western Australia, where his batting flourished in WACA Premier Cricket. A technically sound batter capable of playing long innings while also accelerating when required, he has been viewed as one of Western Australia's brightest batting prospects in recent years.
Fanning made his First-class debut in 2022 for Western Australia against New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield before earning his T20 debut in 2024 for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League as an injury replacement. His List A debut followed in the same year in the Marsh One-Day Cup, completing his progression across all three domestic formats. A product of Australia's Under-19 system, he had already made a name for himself by dominating Premier Cricket, including an outstanding 2021-22 season in which he scored 867 runs with four centuries, performances that paved the way for his state contract.
The left-hander has continued to establish himself in Western Australia's batting unit, producing a string of important Sheffield Shield performances. During the 2025-26 domestic season, he enjoyed the most productive red-ball campaign of his career, registering multiple half-centuries before converting one into a maiden First-class century with a superb 149 against Queensland. His ability to occupy the crease for long periods while maintaining a solid scoring rate has made him an increasingly dependable presence at the top of the order.
In franchise cricket, Fanning remains part of the Perth Scorchers setup, making his Big Bash debut during BBL|13 and continuing to feature in the club's long-term plans. He has also captained the Scorchers in pre-season tournaments, highlighting the leadership qualities the franchise sees in him. In 2026, he was included in the Scorchers squad for the Global Super League, another significant step in his development as he continues to gain experience across formats.
