Born in the Pink City Jaipur, Rajasthan, Priya Punia emerged as an elegant right-handed top-order batter known for her upright stance, fluid drive, and technical composure. Her path to professional cricket was heavily shaped by her father, Surender Punia, who went to great lengths to support her ambition, including selling a property and building a personal practice pitch on the outskirts of Jaipur when she lacked access to proper training facilities. Starting her journey in Delhi and Rajasthan age-group cricket, she steadily progressed through state setups before breaking into senior domestic cricket.
Her early domestic exploits highlighted her penchant for big runs in fifty-over cricket, particularly during the 2018-19 Senior Women's One Day Tournament where she finished as one of the leading run-scorers. Those performances earned her a senior national call-up, making her T20I debut against New Zealand in February 2019. Later that year, she made a sensational WODI debut against South Africa in Vadodara, scoring an unbeaten 75 to join an elite group of Indian women to register a half-century on ODI debut. Shortly after, she struck another crucial 53 against the West Indies in Trinidad.
Her career trajectory faced significant personal and professional hurdles in 2021 when she lost her mother to COVID-19 right before joining the team bubble for India's tour of England. Demonstrating extraordinary resilience, she joined the touring squad, but competitive squad depth and form fluctuations resulted in her losing her place in the main national XI for a period. Punia responded by returning to domestic cricket with Railways, consistently piling up runs in the Senior Women's One Day Trophy to push for a international recall.
Punia earned her way back into India's ODI setup in mid-2023 for the tour of Bangladesh and remained in the national mix through 2024, featuring in white-ball series against South Africa and touring Australia in late 2024. Moving into 2025 and 2026, she maintained impressive consistency in representative and league cricket.
Representing India A on their tour of England in mid-2026, she delivered standout performances in the fifty-over fixtures, including scores of 87 and 61 against England A. She carried that momentum into the 2026 Women's Delhi Premier League for South Delhi Superstars, highlighted by a blistering 117 off 66 balls against East Delhi Riders, confirming her enduring ability as a top-order match-winner.
