A right-hand opening batsman, Dilshan Munaweera started playing at the age of nine. Son of a former first-class cricketer, Dilshan was included in the Under-19 side for the World Cup in Malaysia. He has also represented Sri Lanka at the Under-23 level and Bloomfield Cricket.

The right-hander made his first-class debut in 2008 and went to play for Uva Next in the Sri Lanka Premier League in 2012. Dilshan was then named in the T20I squad for the World Twenty20 in the same year.
