Ben Cox is an experienced wicketkeeper-batter who has built a reputation as one of the most accomplished glovemen in the English county game. Born in Wordsley, Worcestershire, Cox came through the Worcestershire age-group system and initially developed as a batter before taking up wicketkeeping.
He made his first-class debut for his home county in 2009 at just 17, while still a student at Bromsgrove School, and marked the occasion with 61 against Somerset at Taunton. His first dismissal behind the stumps was particularly memorable, as he stumped former England opener Marcus Trescothick off Moeen Ali.
Cox gradually established himself as Worcestershire's first-choice wicketkeeper and became an important part of their side across formats. He registered his maiden first-class century against Essex in 2014 before producing the defining moment of his white-ball career four years later.
During Worcestershire's run to their maiden Vitality Blast title in 2018, Cox was named Player of the Match in both the semi-final and final at Edgbaston, scoring an unbeaten 55 against Lancashire before following it with 46 not out against Sussex to help seal the trophy. He also captained Worcestershire in the 2021 Blast campaign and finished his long association with the county, having established himself as one of their leading T20 run-scorers.
After 15 years with Worcestershire, Cox moved to Leicestershire, initially joining on loan towards the end of the 2023 season before making the switch permanent in 2024. His experience has proved valuable in all three formats, while his work with the gloves has remained a major part of his contribution.
He passed 11,000 career runs and 700 dismissals across formats during the 2025 season, and was also part of Leicestershire's Division Two title-winning campaign. His performances in the 2025 One Day Cup, where he scored 278 runs at an average of 55.6, earned him a call-up from Trent Rockets for The Hundred.
Cox's time with Leicestershire has now come to an end, with the wicketkeeper-batter leaving the club when his contract expires at the end of September 2026. He enjoyed another productive campaign, scoring 259 runs in 10 One Day Cup games before producing an even more impressive return in the County Championship, where he was Leicestershire's leading run-scorer with 728 runs in 12 games during their battle against relegation. With a career spanning more than 15 years at senior level, Cox leaves behind a wealth of experience, a proven record in pressure situations and a reputation for dependable wicketkeeping and valuable middle-order runs.
